I love movies. I love seeing movies in the theater. I'm also that uber nerd that needs to be in my seat early so I can see all the trailers for the upcoming releases. There are some incredible previews that turn into fantastic films. There are also amazing trailers that turn out to be pretty pathetic movies. In this Throwback Thursday, I wanted to look back at some of my favorite trailers, no matter the final result of the film.
For the life of me, I cannot remember what movie I went to see when I first saw this trailer back in 1998. I just remember sitting in the theater as the lights dimmed and the trailers started. I was obviously very aware that a new Star Wars movie was hitting theaters in 1999, but I had no clue I'd get to see the trailer that day. It was glorious!
Keep in mind, this is 1998. There was no YouTube that you could go to in order to check out the latest trailers, or even rewatch them over and over again. In fact, not all households had the internet, or even good enough internet to watch video. So seeing this masterpiece on the big screen was fantastic. It must also be remembered that we all thought Star Wars films were done post Return of the Jedi. Sure there was always rumors that George Lucas had treatments for 9 movies in total, but he had basically said he was done with making the movies. So even though we have a vast amount of Star Wars cinema these days, back then we thought we were done. But low and behold, here in front of my eyes, was proof that Obi-Wan Kenobi, my childhood icon, would return to the screen as a younger version and we'd see the origin of Anakin Skywalker and his rise (or fall depending on how you look at it) to Darth Vader. Say what you will about the final film, the trailer had me so stoked to see the return of the Star Wars universe to cinemas!
