Trailer Breakdown: Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday

Avengers: Doomsday is set to release nationwide in theaters on December 18, 2026.
The first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday isn't just a collection of money shots. It feels like the first MCU trailer since Endgame that has genuine weight behind it. Instead of trying to sell jokes every 20 seconds, it leans into dread, impossible choices, and the feeling that every corner of Marvel history is about to collide. The trailer confirms Robert Downey Jr.'s return as Doctor Doom, reunites heroes from the MCU, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thunderbolts/New Avengers, and sets up a multiversal conflict leading into Secret Wars.
The obvious headline is Robert Downey Jr. Seeing him as Victor Von Doom instead of Tony Stark is still surreal, but the trailer wisely doesn't overplay it. Doom isn't cracking jokes or chewing scenery. He's calm. Confident. Almost inevitable. His opening dialogue immediately establishes him as someone who understands exactly what's coming, and apparently knows the heroes can't stop it.
That's exactly how Doom should be introduced.
He's not another loud villain trying to destroy the world. He's a man convinced he's the only one capable of saving it. That's infinitely more interesting.
One of Marvel's biggest problems over the last several years has been that every movie felt like it existed in its own bubble. This trailer fixes that in about thirty seconds.
The Avengers.
The Fantastic Four.
The X-Men.
The Wakandans.
The New Avengers.
Everyone finally feels like they're inhabiting the same story. For longtime Marvel fans, that's incredibly satisfying.
But there is one standout.
Thor dominates the trailer. He looks like the emotional center of the film, much like Steve Rogers was in Infinity War.
Thor has lived through a litany of tragedies: Loki's death (several times over), Frigga's death, The Warriors Three deaths, Odin's death, losing an eye, Asgard's destruction, Thanos (losing to him several times over), and of course Jane's death. You know, to list a few.
Now he's staring down Doctor Doom.
And speaking of Steve Rogers, Marvel knows exactly what they're doing. The reveal of Chris Evans is intentionally brief, but it lands. Whether this is our Steve Rogers, an alternate Steve. or something much stranger, the trailer wisely keeps that mystery intact. What we do know is that he's still worthy of Mjölnir!
We see a ton of familiar faces, especially from the 20th Century Fox universe. This doesn't feel like nostalgia casting. The trailer treats them like major players rather than cameo appearances. That's exactly what fans wanted after Deadpool & Wolverine. The X-Men don't need to be Easter eggs anymore. Admittedly I'm biased, but they belong in this universe.
It's impossible to ignore just how many characters are involved. Marvel has pulled this off before (Infinity War and Endgame somehow balanced dozens of heroes), but that's still the biggest question. Can every character matter? Or will half of them become glorified cameos?
That's the challenge.
The Russo Brothers have earned some trust after Infinity War and Endgame, but this might be an even bigger balancing act as the characters available to use has only grown since their last stint with the MCU.
I've enjoyed the last several years of Marvel movies, but I do understand the criticism that exists since the height of Avengers: Endgame. After several uneven years for the MCU, I think fans will genuinely be excited for an Avengers movie again. It has mystery. It has emotion. It has scale.
Most importantly it feels like Marvel remembered that audiences want to care about these characters, not just recognize them. If the finished film delivers on even 80% of what this trailer promises, Avengers: Doomsday could become the MCU's biggest event since Endgame.
Now the hard part begins...
