Sometimes the best movie experiences happen when you know absolutely nothing.
No trailer breakdowns. No spoiler-filled social media posts. No YouTube theories. Just sitting down, pressing play, and hoping for the best.
That was my experience with They Will Kill You.
The only thing I knew going in was that it starred Zazie Beetz, and honestly, that's all I needed. I've been a fan of hers ever since Deadpool 2, so I figured she'd make whatever this movie was at least worth watching.
I wasn't expecting to have this much fun.

The opening immediately threw me for a loop. I had no clue where the movie was headed, and for the first several minutes I was convinced I had completely misjudged what kind of film I was watching. Then everything starts falling into place, and suddenly you realize the filmmakers have been playing with your expectations the entire time.
I love when a movie does that.
From there, They Will Kill You turns into this wonderfully chaotic blend of horror, action, and comedy. It somehow manages to be suspenseful, genuinely funny, over-the-top, and surprisingly heartfelt—all without feeling like it's juggling too many ideas.
This is one of those movies where every time you think you've figured it out, it throws another wrench into the machine.

The best part? The twists.
Some of them are so outrageous that I actually laughed because I couldn't believe the movie was going there. But instead of falling apart under its own ambition, everything eventually clicks together. Looking back, all of the crazy decisions actually make sense. It's the kind of storytelling that rewards you for sticking with it.
And I always appreciate that.
Zazie Beetz (Joker, Bullet Train) is excellent as Asia, giving the audience someone to root for while everything around her descends into complete insanity. Patricia Arquette (A Nightmare On Elm Street #: Dream Warriors, True Romance), Myha'la (Leave the World Behind, Industry), Heather Graham (Boogie Nights, Bowfinger), and James Remar (Dexter, 48 Hrs.) all add their own flavor to the madness, making the world feel populated by characters who are just as unpredictable as the story itself.

Now let's talk about the ending.
What the hell did I just watch!?!?!?!?!?!?
A possessed pig's head rules over the Satanic cult? Yep. If you are lucky enough to have your name written on the skin on his head, you are immortal? Sure. And the pig can erase your name by using its tongue to wipe it off? You got it!
You'd think the movie suddenly went bonkers and lost all sense of a sensical plot, but no. For They Will Kill You, it makes perfect sense and I loved it!

One of my favorite moments is Asia's final trick to save both herself and her little sister, Maria. It's clever, satisfying, and exactly the kind of payoff I was hoping for. It doesn't rely on some random miracle or a last-second deus ex machina. Instead, it feels earned because of everything we've watched unfold before it.
And maybe my favorite surprise of all?
The movie actually lets its characters win.
Horror movies have become so obsessed with bleak endings that I've almost come to expect everyone to die, the villain to survive, or some last-second "gotcha" moment to ruin everything we just watched.

Not here.
At least... not yet.
Could there be a sequel? Sure. It is, after all, a horror movie, so the ending leaves just enough room to revisit this world.
But for now, I walked away smiling.
Maybe that's why I enjoy horror as much as I do. Sure, I love the blood, the monsters, the tension, and the creative kills. But what I really love is when filmmakers remember that horror can also be fun. It can surprise you. It can make you laugh one minute and cringe the next.
And every once in a while, it can actually send you home happy.
They Will Kill You did exactly that.

And as someone who apparently loves everything...
...yeah, I loved this one too.
