MobLand Series Recap & Review - Episode 107: The Crossroads

"I have killed no men that didn't deserve killing." - Mickey Cohen

Guy Ritchie has a very unique style but it’s undeniably entertaining. He creates electric dialogue, morally ambiguous characters and seems to really thrive in seedy underworlds where violence is as much of a currency as cash and in that sense his characters are always either rich or hopelessly poor and trying to remedy it through questionable means. These characters can range from drug addicts to bare knuckle brawlers to a member of an English crime syndicate.

Much in the same way American mafia stories explore themes of loyalty and betrayal and the consequences of violating these unwritten rules, a UK crime story such as MobLand addresses these same concepts, just with more worldly accents.

*I will post a recap and small review of each episode just like this every Sunday on release day. At the end of the season I will post a full review of the entire season. If spoilers are ever used, I will make sure it is obvious ahead of time to avoid any mishaps. Until the season ends, I can promise zero spoilers for the time being.*

Episode 107 - The Crossroads

Last we saw, Seraphina and Brendan are on the wrong side of automatic weapons as Harry barrels toward them hoping to save them. Harry arrives to find an empty warehouse, with the exception of numerous dead bodies, Seraphina and Brendan not among them. On the floor, written in blood, is a single word, “WAR.”

Sifting through clues among the dead Harry surmises the probable location of the siblings and so he collects weapons and ammunition and sets off once again to find them.

Realizing Richie turned on their side deal, Maeve sneaks away to confront Richie over the phone. He was supposed to kill Seraphina and spare Brendan. Forever scorned, Richie takes both siblings.

As if this all wasn’t already royally fucked, Eddie starts to overstep his bounds and begins interacting with Gina. Needless to say, Harry will not react well. But that remains to be seen. At the same time, Jan continues to share entirely too much with a friend she doesn’t know nearly well enough. Of course that friend just so happens to be undercover. Figures.

While they certainly set off this war, the Harrigans are beginning to suspect other outside and possible traitorous internal influences determined to orchestrate their family’s demise. Richie has help from someone and it’s not sitting well with Conrad and Maeve. With all this happening, Kevin remains distracted by something Harry said earlier about seeing a man from their childhood who committed unspeakable acts on them. He seems determined to find him.

All the internal chaos ensuing, Harry remains alone and searching for the Harrigan siblings, killing his way to their location.

We finally see them again, oxygen masks on in coffin sized boxes shipped to their probable final location. They await their fates tied to chairs, Seraphina resolute and Brendan quite literally shitting and pissing himself. It quickly becomes obvious the intention of their captors as a screen is set in front of them and nearby a chainsaw sits quietly.

The last moments are on a screen shared with the Harrigans watching, Richie watching with glee and the siblings screaming as the chainsaw is no longer quiet or still. Notified by Kevin that Harry simply isn’t going to make it in time, he reaches out to a new character, one he wants nothing to do with, but knows they are his only option if he wants to save the Harrigan siblings. Last we see of Harry, he has a mortified look on his face as he weighs the implications of reaching out to this new person, named simply, Kat. Kat, influences the proceedings and gently reminds Harry one more time, “You owe me.”

Overall thoughts on Episode 107: The Crossroads -

It’s beginning to happen. All their rash decisions and cross words with Richie, their admittance to killing his son and killing his wife, the war is here and it begins quickly. Harry seems quietly agitated, constantly playing cleanup for the Harrigan family, particularly issues caused by Maeve’s ego. This is an action packed episode further demonstrating Harry’s extensive abilities as a tactical, one-man army. He’s efficient and determined and Tom Hardy is perfectly cast as Harry.

I’m starting to notice a crack in Conrad’s trust in Maeve, doubting certain things she’s claiming. This could prove deadly for Conrad if he’s not careful. Eddie making a move on Harry’s daughter is just par for the course with Eddie and it will hopefully backfire on him in tremendous fashion. This new Kat character could prove to be an interesting addition to the already heady clusterfuck that is this war of brutal retaliation. It’s all a continued exercise in the maniacal family members causing havoc and the fixers being forced to clean it all up as best they can. It’s not going well.
