"Sometimes it tries to kid me
That it's just a teddy bear
And even somehow manage to vanish in the air
And that is when I must beware of the beast in me" - Johnny Cash (written by Nick Lowe)
Guy Ritchie has a very unique style but it’s undeniably entertaining. He creates electric dialogue, morally ambiguous characters and seems to really thrive in seedy underworlds where violence is as much of a currency as cash and in that sense his characters are always either rich or hopelessly poor and trying to remedy it through questionable means. These characters can range from drug addicts to bare knuckle brawlers to a member of an English crime syndicate.

Much in the same way American mafia stories explore themes of loyalty and betrayal and the consequences of violating these unwritten rules, a UK crime story such as MobLand addresses these same concepts, just with more worldly accents.

If spoilers are ever used, I will make sure it is obvious ahead of time to avoid any mishaps. Until the season ends, I can promise zero spoilers for the time being.*

Episode 110 - The Beast in Me
Kevin sits in the aftermath of what he’s done. He seemingly has an entire conversation about his trials and tribulations to a dead man. Blood is splattered everywhere in the kitchen as he begins to have an awakening. Meanwhile Harry closes in with a cleanup crew to handle Kevin’s problem. Unfortunately for Kevin, his issues aren’t all decades old and easily solved with a bullet. He knows who Eddie is and who he most definitely is not.

After Harry finishes with Kevin, he confronts the family rodent problem giving them an ultimatum. He later updates Kevin on the situation and tells him to get his head right. Within the next twenty-four hours, one family will run everything.
Kevin deviates for an hour to finally confront Conrad who, along with Maeve, are still in prison. He says all the things he’s ever wanted to say to the many he sees as the destroyer of his world. He then brazenly proclaims that if Conrad ever sees the outside world again, it will be a new world order, a world Conrad will no longer recognize. Conrad then opens his mouth ensuring any love that may have lingered between them is officially dead.
Gina, Jan, Bella, Seraphina and Eddie all await the next couple of days at a new, isolated location. By all appearances ripe for the picking to any wanting predators nearby. There, Eddie discovers his true origins and takes his anger out on the one person who ever truly loved him, his own mother, Bella. His actions right now are that of a little boy but his mental state is proving to be a worrying case for the future of the Harrigan namesake.

Tattersall further blurs the line between law enforcement officer and mobster. To his agency it appears he’s playing Richie to get the upper hand on the two crime families. In truth his motivations and possibly his loyalties may lie with those he’s been sworn to apprehend. Whatever he’s playing at, it’s not good and trusted agents are paying the price.
Harry sets in motion one final push to get the best of Richie all the while Richie is doing the same. Only in Richie’s case, his targets include Harry’s family. In a battle of wits, only one can come out on top.
As we await Season 2, we must remember what Kevin says at the end of this season, “We won the battle, the war hasn’t even started yet.” Despite the finality to this episode, the enemies still aim to swarm the Harrigan clan and anyone associated with them. Madness still reigns.

Overall thoughts on Episode 110: The Beast in Me -
As season finales go, this is a pretty solid finish to what has been a chaotic and absurdly bonkers freshmen season. From the beginning of the season you can tell the Harrigans are crazy but as each episode carries on you get a clearer picture into the madness that is the Harrigan name. I love the sort of misdirection the last few episodes have taken us on, leading us to believe something that will likely see a different final solution than originally thought. It’s a matter of who is the smartest in the room. Harry or Richie. Conrad and Maeve are off being nuttier than squirrel turds.

As much as this episode ties many things off, it leaves even more left for what’s to come in hopeful future seasons. Enemies remain that may prove to be far more formidable than Richie ever could hope to be. Harry continues to be stoically violent and kind of awesome although despite the sudden change in power, his marriage is far from fixed and Jan’s pain finally comes to the surface in a rather clear way. I enjoyed this season quite a bit and look forward to what’s to come.
