Mayor of Kingstown - Season 4 Recap & Review: Episode 409 - Teeth and Tissue

ree

"It is not power that corrupts but fear." - Aung San Suu Kyi

Just to list a few of the insane amount of projects Taylor Sheridan is working on: six Yellowstone spinoffs including 1883, 1923, and in development, 1944, The Madison, Y: Marshals, and another tentatively titled Dutton Ranch. He also helped create Landman, Tulsa King, Lioness, and the reason you’re here, Mayor of Kingstown. I think the most amazing aspect of so many projects in various stages of production is that most if not all are at least somewhat decent. My personal favorites are Lioness, Tulsa King, Landman, and Mayor of Kingstown. Lioness is giving the rest a run for their money as my favorite of the bunch, but right now I’d have to say Mayor is in the top spot.

I talked about this in my articles on The Terminal List: Dark Wolf recaps but I’m a sucker for a good “dad show.” And as bleak and hopeless as Mayor of Kingstown is, it is still very much a “dad show.”

And just for clarification for those who didn’t read my explanation of what a “dad show” is in the Dark Wolf articles:

“The characteristics often consist of action, violence, crime, and justice. Vengeance is a big theme in these kinds of series as well. They often satiate an internal desire for heroism at any cost, especially at the defiance of authority. The main character is usually an anti-hero or rather a morally conflicted hero willing to bend and or break what they hold to be true if it means their foes fall as a result.” In that regard, it’s hard to argue Mayor is anything but a “dad show.”

The IMDb description of Mayor of Kingstown is as follows:

“The McLusky family are power brokers tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry.”

S:4 E: 409 – Teeth and Tissue

No technical spoilers, however each recap addresses what happens in each episode. If you don't want to be spoiled, watch the coinciding episode first and then come back to my recap and review.

Tracy has met her fate. Robert is gone. And Merle is still on the loose. How can Mike possibly recover from this?

Once and for all, Mike demands Kyle’s freedom. Immediately. In return, Mike will follow through with his plans for Moses. And Moses is feeling particularly vindictive after the death of his friend, LJ.

Mike covers up Lamar’s transgressions. He promises him a clean slate. Time will tell.

Hobbs confronts CO Breen about an excessive force complaint toward an inmate. She places him on restricted duty in the armory. Breen’s mental state continues to crack.

Kyle is on suicide watch for obvious reasons. If Mike doesn’t deliver and get him free, Kyle will not survive. Mike visits him one last time before his release. Once again, Kyle refuses to see him so Mike is brought to Kyle instead. After what happened Kyle wonders what the point is anymore. Mike pleads with him. He’s losing him every minute Kyle is stuck in that hell.

Hobbs opens up to Mike about the condition of her “relationship” with the cartel. Contentious at best I think.

Mike reveals some of his cards to Moses. He makes it clear that Lamar is the shooter and that they know Moses tried to take over Kingstown. Lamar was always going to die. He tells Moses he just wants peace, at the hands of whoever can provide it. Hopefully Moses doesn’t smell the setup.

Bunny is finally leaving the hospital. His bloodlust is insatiable. But he understands patience is the best path to retribution.

Mike facilitates Lamar for Moses. He won’t be able to deny the opportunity. The trap is set. Ian and Stevie wait to pounce.

After an inmate in Ad Seg smears shit all over the walls, they call Breen to clean it up. This is the last straw for Breen. In Kingstown, tragedy is never more than a day away.

It seems at the end of every day, the people of Kingstown take stock of the day, thinking it’s over ‘til morning. Wishful thinking. There is no reprieve here.

Mike holds up his end of the deal. Now it’s Evelyn’s turn. GET KYLE OUT!

Unfortunately, Breen just might ruin everything.

ree

For every bit of good news, there is a mountain of bad in its wake.

But none of that matters anymore. Now? It’s hunting season. The prey? Merle fucking Callahan. Of course this is Kingstown, nothing is ever that easy. Case in point – the cartel is on the attack once again. This time Mike, Kyle, Ian, and Stevie are in the crosshairs.

Overall thoughts on Episode 409: Teeth and Tissue

As much as Merle is a demon of the flesh, he is seemingly a product of his environment. Kingstown is a disease and produces current inmates and future inmates. Old age seems to be a luxury few in this town ever get to experience. Kyle is spinning. He wants to die but he also wants Merle’s head. Mike aims to make the latter happen. But it makes you wonder, even if Merle meets the appropriate end, what then? Breen’s, let’s call it an outburst, is a culmination of his anger and disrespect building into what it became. I fear Mike’s obvious betrayal of Moses will set things in motion for the next season that could see Mike and Kyle in a bad way with even worse people. First thing’s first – survive this damn ambush.
