Mayor of Kingstown - Season 4 Recap & Review: Episode 404 - Sins of Omission

ree

"When you don't take a stand against corruption you tacitly support it." - Kamal Haasan

Just to list a few of the insane amount of projects Taylor Sheridan is working on: six Yellowstone spinoffs including 1883, 1923, and in development, 1944, The Madison, Y: Marshals, and another tentatively titled Dutton Ranch. He also helped create Landman, Tulsa King, Lioness, and the reason you’re here, Mayor of Kingstown. I think the most amazing aspect of so many projects in various stages of production is that most if not all are at least somewhat decent. My personal favorites are Lioness, Tulsa King, Landman, and Mayor of Kingstown. Lioness is giving the rest a run for their money as my favorite of the bunch, but right now I’d have to say Mayor is in the top spot.

I talked about this in my articles on The Terminal List: Dark Wolf recaps but I’m a sucker for a good “dad show.” And as bleak and hopeless as Mayor of Kingstown is, it is still very much a “dad show.”

And just for clarification for those who didn’t read my explanation of what a “dad show” is in the Dark Wolf articles:

“The characteristics often consist of action, violence, crime, and justice. Vengeance is a big theme in these kinds of series as well. They often satiate an internal desire for heroism at any cost, especially at the defiance of authority. The main character is usually an anti-hero or rather a morally conflicted hero willing to bend and or break what they hold to be true if it means their foes fall as a result.” In that regard, it’s hard to argue Mayor is anything but a “dad show.”

The IMDb description of Mayor of Kingstown is as follows:

“The McLusky family are power brokers tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality in Kingstown, Michigan, where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry.”

S:4 E: 404 – Sins of Omission

No technical spoilers, however each recap addresses what happens in each episode. If you don't want to be spoiled, watch the coinciding episode first and then come back to my recap and review.

Mike and Cindy’s relationship continues to grow. Like anything good in Kingstown, their happiness is cut short; with flamethrowers of all things. The third player keeps upping the violence. It’s making things tenuous at best, catastrophic more than likely.

Mike’s suspicions of who Kyle’s cell neighbor is, is beginning to manifest itself on the outside in Kyle’s literal front yard. Could be nothing. Could be everything.

Mike is keeping close to Bunny and Moses, likely to make sure Bunny doesn’t buy too much into Moses’ potential lies. Both Bunny and Mike know who and what Moses is, but the words coming from his mouth sound much sweeter in Bunny’s ears which is why Mike is worried. He’s waiting out Moses to hopefully uncover his larger motives and then act accordingly.

Kyle’s cell neighbor is still pushing for a friendship with him, but we all know who this guy is, and it’s nothing good. Once Kyle realizes who he is, he’ll keep his distance too, we can only hope. At the same time, Mike puts Tracy’s worries at ease.

Ian fades further from the light than ever before in regards to Evelyn. It’s concerning to say the least. He’s more cornered now and it’s starting to get people hurt. Evelyn tells Mike about the ace up her sleeve when it comes to Ian. It could throw everything into chaos.

Believing Robert’s story, Mike turns his eye to Ian himself. He can’t prove anything but Mike’s not stupid.

Cindy finally collects the info Mike requested.

Warden Hobbs keeps making moves signaling her corrupted nature. All the straightened arrow bravado she wears is nothing but a Halloween mask, flimsy and more obvious by the day.

ree

Mike and Evelyn reconcile after death touches her, almost taking her forever. He is worried it will come for her again if she keeps pushing for the prosecution of Ian and Robert.

Bunny’s spy on the inside discovers a secret that could ruin the plans of the third player. Mike is made aware.

Mike is also finally told who Kyle’s cell neighbor is and as expected, Mike’s not happy. Like I said before, happiness is rare in Kingstown.

Overall thoughts on Episode 404: Sins of Omission

A slower episode this season, it’s more about revelation than action. It’s a sort of staging of things to come. Mike is spinning in every direction faster than ever. Robert is clearly unhinged and so is Ian. And neither sees the fault in their behavior which is all the more worrying. Mike’s desperation to get Bunny to see Moses how Mike does is commendable. The escalation of the third party has potential for great loss, mass violence, and utter mayhem. A plan for this third player was needed yesterday. I hope it’s not too late.
